ANZAC Round News
What a massive day at the Goon last Saturday with our Anzac game against our friends from KWR. The weather was perfect and a huge crowd was in attendance to witness some great games of footy and netball. Thanks to members from NNG and KWR RSL that assisted with the pre-game ceremonies.
A big thanks to all of the committee and volunteers that helped out with the preparation and jobs on the day.

It is so good to have the footy back and thriving again with great crowds witnessing some fantastic matches.
We also had the pleasure of unveiling a memorial seat in memory of club LEGEND Ray Coombs. It was great to have the Coombs family present for this special event and a lasting recognition of the massive contribution Ray made to NNG FC over so many years.
We also had a reunion for the 1980 premiership team in the clubrooms prior to the senior game. It is always great to have our past players back at the club and reminisce about glory days.

This year, two of our long term players in Shannon Stocco and Lucas Thomas have decided to call time on their football at Nar Nar Goon.
This year, two of our long term players in Shannon Stocco and Lucas Thomas have decided to call time on their football at Nar Nar Goon.
The end of an era has come for a veteran of the Nar Nar Goon Football Club. Shannon Stocco has decided hang up the boots after 25 years of competitive football including 19 years of senior football.
Few across West Gippsland and Ellinbank would not have heard of Shannon, as he is very hard to miss on the football field with his enthusiasm, presence, competitiveness and chatter. Consistently voted the most annoying team mate at the club, he never goes unnoticed. Shannon began playing as an 11 year old in the under 13’s around 1997 then progressed through the grades, Fourths 2000-01, Thirds 2002-04 and seniors thereafter until his final game in 2021 when covid halted the season and ultimately his playing days. In Shannon played a colossal 239 senior games, along with 37 reserves, 48 thirds and 28 fourth games. Shannon’s debut senior game was in 2003 whilst still in the thirds, was in round 5 against Cerberus. It was a notable for other reasons, in that Simon Ponter kicked the club record of 15 goals in that game. In 2004 he played 3 more senior games before becoming a regular in 2005. Goal kicking was Shannon’s passion from early juniors to current day. Always one to be celebrate to the max, the opposition had no doubt who had kicked the goal. A total of 303 senior goals makes Shannon the 3rd highest goal kicker for the club. Along the journey this included 11 bags of 5 or more, and a career high of 8 in 2011 vs Buln Buln. A highlight for Shannon would ultimately be being a member of the 2010 Senior premiership. The 10 year reunion provided great entertainment last year for his teammates, whilst he was still playing. Next time they’ll all be on the same side of the fence. Over the years Shannon’s value to the team through his determination has not gone unnoticed. 4 times he has been awarded the clubs most determined player. In 2013 Shannon joined his brother Matt at Doveton for a year, before returning in 2014 to again relishing being up forward, to become the club’s leading goalkicker. In later years Shannon was given more defensive roles, but always known to slip forward for any possible opportunity. As always though, giving maximum energy and effort to every contest. Thank you Shannon for your playing service to the Nar Nar Goon Football Club, and wishing you and your family success and happiness in whatever comes next. |
Lucas Thomas, or better known as “LT”, has decided to call time on his brilliant football career at The Goon. One the purest and silkiest movers of the ball across the years at the club, he has always been an attention getting player on the field. He is very often noticed by the umpires and been a regular vote getter in league awards. A player that has certainly worn the number 11 with great pride and distinction.
Joining Nar Nar Goon in 2004 after around 100 games at Berwick Juniors, he fitted straight into our under 18’s team. Then in 2005 joined the senior ranks and made his senior debut. LT was a regular in the seniors for the first 3 years and thereafter predominately one of the main workhorses in the reserves team. This was a team that for 11 consecutive years (2008-2018) was top 4, and brought home 4 premierships (2009-10-11-14). Lucas played in 3, was a major contributor in 2010 until an untimely hamstring injury during the finals. A late bid to play that grand final just fell short. In 2013 Lucas was playing some of his best football, won the club’s reserves B&F award, played several senior games, and nearly capped it off with another reserves premiership. In a premiership year, Lucas won the 2014 league Reserve grade best and fairest award. Consistently impressing the umpires, right up to last year, during 2021’s interrupted season, he was among the league’s leading vote getters. Throughout his career Lucas was a no fuss and low profile person around the club, but his work ethic to training and preparation for a game was always at a top level. Not something often seen at reserves level. Lucas led the reserves in 2017 as playing coach, and yet another finals campaign. Throughout Lucas’ career he has played 47 senior, 227 reserves and 16 thirds games. This also included 16 senior and 209 reserve goals. A fantastic career at The Goon spanning 18 years. Whilst Lucas maybe moving on with other things in his life, football won’t be lost to him and a Super Rules career beckons. The Nar Nar Goon Football Club wish Lucas and family all the best for the future. |
